My Black Beauties were already missing color in a few small spots when I opened them. I use a pick 90% of the time and the color wore away in no time.
Plus the DR Extra Life strings are very mellow. Not good for metal IMHO, though they can growl with a little distortion. (Though in Death Metal, if you do the typical and play unison lines with the rhythm guitar so you aren't really heard as a separate instrument, cutting through may not be an issue that concerns you.)
I think DR Extra Life strings would be best suited to mellow finger style jazz or some such.

That's what DR calls all its coated strings. The other names are just colors.
Like I said, I don't recommend them for metal or aggressive playing styles. I don't think any color coated string is going to be right for you.
Want red strings? Just play hard enough that you bleed all over 'em.
(Seriously, I used to play with a bassist who was a compulsive hand-washer and had super dry skin. By the time we were finished with our sets his fingers had often cracked open and bled all over his Spector.)

I think all that plastic waxy crap would make a mess of your hands, your strings, your bass and your tone!
Lets concentrate on sounding the part first!! |
