Thanks for telling me - I was considering a set hoping they would look great on my SR, but not if they're to mellow, and the color comes off right away using picks like I do.

Not trying to make any insults here, just saying by Death Metal Elitist standards a Dean Metalman with black/red coated strings could come off as trying to hard to be brutal when bassists like Alex Webster and guitarists in other Death Metal bands are using more classic fenderish looking guitars and regular strings.

But hell, you have the bass, if you dig the strings, and any one talks **** just give them the middle finger salute.

Does the coating rub off on fingers also or is it just the aggresive picking?

The coating on DR's only wears off right where the pick hits the string so you'll only see bare metal at your right hand position.

The worn strings kind of just show you played it alot, they're mojo.

I can't see it hurting anything, but i'd bet it'll sound terrible. If you really want coloured strings just try them. I've got them on one of my basses. They look cool and they sound good to me. I think the red on black would look great.

I was actually hoping to get a set for the bass I just built, but unfortunately they don't fit a 37" scale.

Strings tend to be a pretty subjective thing, so you'll never know if you like them until you try them. I say go for it.

I play mostly with my fingers and haven't had any of it come off. I think it's probably an enamel, similar to the coating on magnet wire.

I think worrying about looking like a poseur is worse than being one. If you think it looks cool, don't worry about it.
