Looking for string advice

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello people of TB. I have just recently defretted my Fender P-Lite. I'm at the point of stringing and setting it up. I was using GHS Roundwound Medium, .045-.105 . I would like to install a nice set of flat wound strings. I am not familure with how flat wound sizes feel compared with round wound. I would like to keep the existing nut on the bass, so going with smaller diameter strings would be a problem I would think where the nut adjustment is going to be a precision file job.
By the way, the neck looks great. It took two hours to removed the frets using a soldering iron and a modified set of nippers. There was minimum chipping (really none at all). I filled the fret slots with two part epoxy. Before filling the frets I made a custom sanding block to the radious of the neck. I sanded it to a 600 grit surface. I posted a couple of pics. Sorry for the poor quality.
Any advice on strings would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jim

Snowing here right now... Day off... Great day to PLAY!

Looks like a good job. Have you considiered some sort of protective coating? Might come in handy should you ever go back to rounds.

There are many different brands of flats you could get. You might want to get a set with similar gauges klike what you are used to. I like GHS Precision Flats in light gauge .45-.95) for a more traditional flat wound sound and Thomastic-Infields (.43-.100) for a brighter sound.

Thanks fretlessguy, I actually ended up putting on a set of RotoSound monel flatwound strings .105 - .045 I was very limited to what the Guitar stores had available at the time. I'm not very happy with these strings. The E string is very course, not as flat as I would like. The finnish on the strings is very incosistant between the strings. The smaller strings are shiney where the larger strings are dull. Looks like I mixed and matched from a bin of strings. The sound seems to be Ok though. I am very happy with the conversion. The action is low, and the playability is great. I was always a fan of the GHS strings, I'm thinking of ordering up a set of them.
Thanks again fretlessguy...

Try the D'Addario Chromes and you should be happy. 45-100 set.

Would going dowm to .100 from .105 be a problem with the nut?
