Looking to try new coated strings, whats the best?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have been using Elixir's for a while but am just not satisfied with them lately. I need coated strings and have seen the exp's, extra lifes, and ernie ball coated strings but im sure there are others. Which ones do you use and how do you like them?

The new DR K3 coated strings are nice. The old DR coated strings felt kind of rubbery; these are much "drier" feeling.

I really liked the DR Bootzillas. They have a funky powderish coating that flakes away relatively quickly when new, but the tone to me sounded crisp and growly, unlike the muffled and bland sound the Elixir set I'm demoing.

Only coated strings Ive tried and liked are the new DR neons. Their black beauties are said to use the same coating now but of course in black instead of the colors the neons come in.

DR Black Beauties or Neons are nice. I'm currently running Rotosound Nexus black coated on my Fender P Deluxe and absolutely love them.

c man 44, can you elaborate? Growl, clarity, tension, etc.? How do they compare to the other coated strings you've used?

First of all, they feel great. Great mids. Bright and growly if your really digging in but very mellow and warm when playing normal finger style.
If you can find a video of Eva Gardner(Pinks bassist), she uses these strings.

I guess I would compare them to Rotosound Jazz bass 77's but to be truthful, I've been using the Nexus on this bass for long enough that I've forgotten what the other ones actually sounded like on it.

I have Elixirs on my Lakland DJ4 and I have Black Beauties on my Geddy. I like the feel, tone and tension of the Black Beauties much better, but the Elixirs seems to keep their brightness for much longer.

Do people realize DR makes more coated then just the new neons and black beauties. All of their colored strings are coated.
