Question In Love! Need help.

Sign in to disble this ad
Recently i've tried out a Fender Standard Fretless, and it was strung with flatwounds. I dig it's tone and am in love with the strings, but I have a few questions.

1. What are the strings I have fallen in love with, and how much on average do they cost?

2. Will these strings work well on a fretted P-bass, rosewood neck?

3. Would i like any other strings better? And if so, try to elaborate.

Please help if you can!

It's likely that they were the stock Fender flats, which cost around $25 at my local music shop. Flats and a P go together like peanut butter and jelly, you can't go wrong with that combination. However, I think you'd do better with other flats; a lot of people love TI flats (I don't have any experience with those so I can't comment) but D'Addario Chromes and Labellas work excellently also- the Labella flats are some of the best I've ever tried, great smooth vintage vibe. I find the Fender flats to provide good thump but can sound a bit hollow to my ear, plus they're ridiculously high tension (even compared to Labellas) which can be hard on weaker necks. Chromes have a bit more top end and high mids than most flats, still sound very smooth but a bit more modern than traditional flats. I'd recommend Labella Deep Talkin 760FL, I think they'll be exactly what you're looking for.

Thank you very much BassMan250, and your suggestion has been very helpful. Unfortunately the music store I visit will never carry LaBellas. The Fenders are as good as it gets. Also, do you have any sound samples of the Chromes or the LaBellas?

I think LaBellas are similar to the Fenders. They are very close in feel and sound. TI's and Rotosounds are closer to rounds tonally. Don't know about other brands.

If you want other flats but can't find them at your local shop I suggest ordering some online, there are some great sites with huge selections and excellent prices; I use www.juststrings.com and it's served me well.

I love Fender flats, why change if you are digging them?

Here is a recent thread with a good discussion about the various flats:

All right, i went to my other music store and tried out a set of LaBellas. They felt king of sticky, and I just couldn't get the brightness out of them that I could the fenders.

Another question, are there any cheap, bright flats out there, that would work with a Jazz(my current GAS object)?
