Low output on DandG with LaBella Tapes

I am really new to tapes and I bought these just to experiment. I have tried the Fender Tapes and liked them except the E on them seemed to have low output and an undefined sound. The Labella set sounds great on the E and A but the D and G are so weak in output and definition. I guess that they are were pretty much made and are still made to get that bass vibe when most of the groove work was on the E and A. Could I have got a bad set or is that the nature of these? Anyone Use the Status Graphite tapes as well? How would they compare?

I used them for years on a bass I no longer have, and I never had a problem with lower output on the D and G. But if you're looking for good definition, why are you trying tapewounds? They're extra light gauge rounds wrapped in tape to suppress overtones. That tends to get you warm fuzziness, not good definition.

I am trying tapes to get a warm and woody sound. Just looking for a new sound as compared to what I do usually. Expanding the horizons you might say. I will try to explain myself better. There is a noticeable drop in volume between the E and A and the D and G when I pluck or pick plugged in to a couple of different amps. I am going to change them to a different bass right now and see if it makes a difference.

They do the same on my bass. I have a 5-string with LaBella Tapes and I'd describe their behavior about the same. I have discovered that they are very sensitive about where you pluck. I kind of get in the habit of plucking a little closer to the bridge on the lower strings and farther away from the bridge on the D and G. Even a half-inch makes a difference. It evens them out some. I have also been using a Todd Johnson-ish floating thumb technique, which gives me a lot more control over the tone of the D and G than anchoring my thumb on the B, E, or pup ever did. I do like their warmth, and you can get good definition without the twang.

Changed the strings but had to go to work and still have not tried them on the different bass yet. I am new to tapes and admittedly unwise about them but they sound so warm! I think I may have read a past thread that it had somthing to do with the large difference in gauge beween the DandG and EandA but I may be imagining that. Couldn't find it again. i will try some different fingering and maybe raise up the pickup height on that side? Just havin' some fun with this new sound! Hope I can get them to sound even across the whole spectrum because I really dig this non-SS zingy modern rock bass sound. Stand by for next transmission!
