Low String Buzz

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, I have a 5-string electric bass which, whenever I play the low B string, vibrates against and hits the neck of my bass making a sort of annoying buzzing sound. Does anyone know of a solution to stop it from doing this?

Did you check the relief, usually manufacturerer has recommended settings for relief. Messing with the truss rod is touchy. Might want to take it to a local tech and have them set it up properly if you don't know how to set it up.

A good set up will more than likely do the trick. Also, maybe try a set of hexcore strings. If your strings are round core, they may be a little floppier.

You need to check the setup of your string action, setting right bridge and neck. Probably if the buzz is too loud is because you neck need more tension.
The rule is simple, clockwise truss rod you made you bass action lower, decreasing the fingerboard tension, counterclockwise you increase the tension and your strings will become much higher from the fingerboard. But CAREFUL the truss rod is easy to use BAD and hard to use GOOD. You need to keep in mind that truss rod need to be used in small turn every time, not much the half turn each time, PLUS the buzz sound can depend also from your bridge setting. Usually when you find the right setting on your bridge you need to set the action just by truss rod because the weather can change the fingerboard action in different way, just because is the wood nature :-)
Cheers. Enrico
