Making "custom" gauge sets from singles

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm curious to see what the experience of others has been when making sets from single strings. I've been doing this for a couple of years now as I haven't been in a band tuned in standard in ages.

Currently I'm using d'Addario Nickels:
135 tapered, 95, 70, 50 tuned Bb/C, F, Bb, Eb

I like the relative uniformity of tension across the strings, but have always had to keep the treble side of my pickups closer to create uniformity of output.

Is anyone doing anything similar with gauges? Any experiences good or bad?

I also like uniformity across the fretboard. Loved the set of Roto's that were, 45-65-85-105 for that very reason. But now I use Ric strings on my 4003, and Slinky's on my 4004 which is tuned BEAD, so I buy the 5 string set with a .125 B string, and have lots of "extra" G strings hangin' around.

Did you find that the Rotos, which are gauged a typical 45-105, to have relatively uniform tension from string to string?

I've always found that the D's feel the most tense, then G's, then A's, then E's (which always felt floppy), then B's.

Looking into the tensions is what led me to d'Addario (as they publish their tensions), and eventually to ordering the strings as singles and putting together my own sets.

The struggle I've had is in avoiding booming low strings and anemic high strings, thus the tweaking of the pickups.

Contrary to many stories I've heard, I've never had a bad set of Roto's. The tension from string to string seems fairly even, but I stretch the crap out of any new strings I put on. I have a couple of sets of Roto's right now, but don't intend on using them with either of my Rics, very happy with Ric's own brand of strings, and those .125 Slinky's.
