I know this may seem stupid, but what is the "Meanest" string? what has the most, grit, punch, clank? Some sort of roundwound? stainless?

Pyramid pure nickel roundwounds? (not cheap )

DR Longnecks got some crunchy clank. Tried a set on
a Yammer 260F with an uncoated rosewood board .
I'd just replaced the bridge with a Gotoh 201. Ran the
whole mess through an Ampeg B-15. Fer grins, I set
the "pre" on 10 and the master on 3. Sounded like
somebody playin' a piano with a chainsaw .

Definitely the d string. A string's a close second.

Thumbs up Roto Flats!

Rotosound RS77 'Jazz Bass' flats, to be exact. They are the funkee snit!

Extremely tight, punchy and brigher than your usual flats. I was just thinking if I should call the store and order a set for my Kingston too.. I think I will.

I've heard Roto flats go dull pretty quickly -- obviously not as quickly as rounds, but long before most flats.

Any truth to that based on your experience?

Rotosound Swing 66. All-steel. They're quite bight and harsh, with lots of clank. And they feel so rough on your fingers.

Meanest?

Define Meanest? Meanest on fingers, frets or ears? At any rate i would say Rotosound stainless steels. might as well use 18 gauge chicken wire

I'll second that vote - they're my favourite strings!

Yes! Definitely very mean strings. I used to swear by them. They are also very mean to your frets, nothing will eat frets faster than steel rotosounds.

Sorry, can't really say at this point, I've had them only few weeks. I would imagine that if they go dull, they'll just sound more like "normal" flats.

But if something happens, I'll let you know.

I'll put another vote in for Rotosound Swing66s. They've got some good grind to them and when they're new, there's nothing that'll make your bass come alive more.

UNFORTUNATELY, it's been my experience that these strings do not last very long. So, after some experimentation, I settled on DR Low-Riders - good stuff. Not as 'alive' as the Rotos, but sound fantastic and last a looooooonnnnngggg time. Cost a little more, but definitely worth it.
