That could have plenty to do with the strings you're using, how often you change tunings, or it also could have a lot to do with your technique (not suggesting anything). if you play with a pick and you're attacking it improperly and at the wrong location on the string, that could have something to do with it. If you're picking, say, a breakdown, you're probably going to be flipping out while playing it. if you constantly pick it too hard too high up on the string, you might run into problems. if you stick more toward the bridge, the string is going to flex less = less tension. find the sweet spot.

i play many styles of music, metal included, including some pretty heavy post-hardcore stuff in my band, and i have NEVER broken an E string. When i used to slap, i broke a few G's, but never ever an E. i do change my strings quite often so i go through roughly 3 packs a year, but that doesn't count for what you're asking.

that said, i do play fingerstyle. i personally find it impossible to break a string playing fingerstyle. I have experience with DR hi-beam strings and various ernie balls, never had a problem.

rock on man.

I've only ever broken one E, and that was a 2-3 year old GHS Bass Boomer, which had probably had its day.

I play metal and hard rock, and I would probably call my self a 'moderate' player in terms of string punishment. I prefer to play lightly, as it gets a deeper sound. Leave the amp to do the amplifying.

Not to swing OT, but do any metal/hard rock players here use flatwounds? I've read on some sites they aren't good for metal, but don't some guys like Steve Harris use them? I'm interested because I hear they have a nice warm tone (I hate the zing of new roundwounds). Would changing to flatwounds (of similar gauge, if possible) require any changes in setup?
