I've tried roto steels and nickels, dunlop nickels, dr sunbeams and lowriders, and a set of ghs boomers, but none of them have really tickled my tone bone per se. The roto nickels were on the right track but the life span was horrible they died in a week..
I'm not really looking for the roto steel brightness, I'm really just looking for the most low/mid mid-forward, not so much for the wicked bright stainless hi mids and highs.. any suggestions? |

How long does the coating on those last? I've seen some reviews on youtube about the guitar strings (Red Devils) in which the coating came off in a week. This could also be due to how the string was mounted. The directions indicate that you have to be careful not to scrape the string when pulling it through the bridge plate/piece as it may damage the coating. |

| | | | Dean markley Blue steel and Dr Neons both have great mids. The BS's a little more kick to the low bass, the Neons a little more hifi tone to the low bass.

| | | | I just got a set of fodera nickel strings. Very much midrange indeed. Give them a try. |

By far the most growly string I have ever tried were rotosound 66's, but you might as well just go ahead and take a file to your frets and fingers. The other two choices are close, though. I think most steel strings fall way short when compared to nickel string growl.

Actually the coating lasts a long time even if you are using a pick, the colored part scrapes off though.

Much more high mids, treble, & bass to me. | It boggles my mind sometimes how different strings sound on different basses.
I have to cut low mids with the Sadowsky's on my Lakland to make them sound close to the Nickel LoRiders I normally use on that bass. Nickel LoRiders have a punch and presence that no other string has on that bass. Sunbeams were also disappointing on my Lakland.
Then again, those same Nickel LoRiders sound puny on my Warwick, which still has Ernie Ball Cobalts which sound HUGE on that bass. But Cobalts on my Lakland....crap. Awful. Sunbeams too. Awful.
Sunbeams on my Spector? Tone straight from God himself.
Funny how things work like that!

How's the life span and how rough are they? If I dig them I may try them on my fretless.. looking for new strings for that too with the same tonal goal in mind. I'm curious about the cobalts too.. Anybody have anything else about them? |
