Mild GC rant - No SS only nickel 5 string sets

Sign in to disble this ad
I've always been a stainless guy but lately it's been only nickel. Why? Because it seems that GC doesn't stock even one 5 string SS set, only nickel. Seen one or two at Sam Ash but they weren't the gauges I want and there's not one here.

Yes I know I can order them online but when I can ride my bike to GC it's a little frustrating.

I've been using nickel for a while now since they're a little easier on the frets. I used to pay too much money for LaBella's. I gave up on GC long ago because they never had anything I wanted - never was a GHS fan among others. I recently discovered Carvin's strings - they are actually made by LaBella for a fraction of the price. I'm using their
#5511 mediums. I have a GC up the street from me too - a few miles, but I'd go the online route for whatever you need. I really don't go to GC for anything anymore, although I buy a lot from GC online and Musicians Fiend - same place I know.

Hmmm... GC Louisville must be an oddball in the GC chain of stores. Tons of SS stings everywhere, Rotos mainly, GHS, Ernie Balls, all in 4 and 5 string sets. I just bought a set there because it was near where I was working. I also played an MM Game Changer, too many buttons and switches, but that's a different story.

Be happy they carry a 5 string set at all. I have a sam ash and GC in the same complex and neither one of them even CARRY 5 string sets.

Yeah I've seen that site some good deals on there.

Also in a bit of a transition on brands. Was a Rotosound player then got into the Dean Markley Will Lee tapered core sets but they don't make them in the gauges I want (.45-.135)

Played an Ernie Ball and D'adarrio so far both were ok but miss that zing of SS.

did you ask the manager to bring some in or just whine on TB?

I don't mean to sound like a cold dork --- the reality is that I could whine that thbey don't carry strings for a Chapman stick or Dulcimer.... or my preferred light scale, exposed core etc.

Find a locally owned shop and have them bring some in and stock them for you ... I have a place that does this... no lines.. no dorking around..

IF your GC doesn't have sales volume they won't bring them in (unless asked)

I haven't bought strings at a GC in years ... probably 10 years... online is the way to go, you get more and pay less.

Sorry you took this as a whine it was more an observation I've noticed at several GC stores.

And yes I've asked if the local independent store could order some and they could at full retail which is quite cost prohibitive as I'm sure you know.

I'll order online to get what I want and I'm sure I'll find something else to whine about soon enough though.

Full retail? Like msrp? No one pays msrp. Its a suggested price. If your talking about standard retail pricing then that's normal cause that's what the map price is for the strings. That's what everyone pays.

An update:

Placed an order Friday at JustStrings and it got here today. Got exactly what I wanted at a competitive price. No hassle at all and I'll be using them from now on.

Haven't found anything to whine about yet but the day's not over.

Now if the rain will stop so I can get my gear out of the trailer... Oh wait was that a whine? Damn...
