Minimum string tension?

Sign in to disble this ad
Anyone know what the minimum string tension is?
I have an extremely short scale bass of 24.5" and am finding if i use heavier gauge strings i can get the same tension as the extra light bass strings.
If i went with a set of round nickel strings 50-105 the E's tension is about 20.8, or with Chromes at the same gauge the E is at 21.5lbs, don't think anything larger than a 110 will fit in the saddle. Using a 110 of either is about 24lbs tension
The rest of the strings are about 25lbs and up, which feels good.
May have to order a custom set once i get an idea of what string tension i'm looking for.

There is no minimum tension. Generally 30 lbs is as light as you'll find them without going custom, but with a string that is constructed to be stiff and inflexible, you can reasonably get by with less tension.
