Mixed String Set for Black Metal Bass

Sign in to disble this ad
I play bass in a black metal band and will be entering the studio soon. I have been playing for quite some time but have never really taken the proper steps to find a tone that I love and that cuts through properly. I utilize a variety of techniques and have been recently researching different string types and gauges.

I am wondering if anyone has any experience in this sort of experimentation with string types. I play a five string bass to acheive a larger variety of tone. My desired tone is flat and low end for the low B and E strings, and a clickier brighter tone for the A, D, and G strings. Would it make any sense to use thick gauge flatwound nickel strings for my low end and thinner gauge roundwound stainless steel for my higher strings. I hope to bottom out the low end to create a heavier sound while cutting through the mix with the mids. Any suggestions or ideas?

Right before you go into the studio is not the time for experimenting. Stick with what you know. Wait til you get some downtime or a slow period to experiment with your tone and setup.
