Mixing different sets of chromes..tension?

Sign in to disble this ad
I took off the set of Chromes I'd had on my P-bass (50-105) and replaced them with the lighter set I used to have on my Ray34 (45-100). However, because the tuner location of the 'G' on the Ray makes it shorter, I had to keep the G string from the heavier set.

The gauge difference between these G's isn't much(45 to 50), but the tension difference is significant, 45 lbs to 55 lbs.

Here are the tensions:

45-100 set:
G 045 normal for this set 45.7 lbs... now the G is at 55.0...stronger than the D
D 065 52.0 lbs
A 080 43.7 lbs
E 100 38.4 lbs

Will having this higher tensioned G string hurt the 'balance' of my bass? I'm especially concerned if there will be any undue lateral pressure on the DG side of the neck since the G is now higher than the already high-tensioned D.

You may have to go with your intuition on this one. Does the neck look like its twisting?

Just my .02, I use chromes on all my basses and I think I would hate that 50 G string

I'd say buy a single and don't bother chancing it.

Any idea who sells Chromes in singles? I don't recall seeing that on the D'addario website but I could have easily missed that.

I might try that route, but for now I'm playing it safe. I figured why wait until the neck shows some movement and just removed them. A few lbs difference might be OK, but that's a 20% difference in tension between those two G's.

Still went with D'addario, but switched back to rounds, their Nickels. So far I'm liking rounds again.

I believe singles can be found on amazon or ebay.
