MM SR4 -> D-tuned

Sign in to disble this ad
I keep my SR4 tuned to D. But my E (now D) string loses much of it's clarity when in D, almost sounds like a flat. I use EB Super Slinky's 100, 80, 65, 45. When tuned to E, they sound great. What can I do?
I have a set of Hybrid Slinky's that I didn't like in E (105, 85, 65, 45) I felt that the E and A didn't have enough punch, all mud. Would thay have good clarity in D?
(I know...just try it...)

well, the 105 E sounds heavier, but still doesn't have the sparkling clarity that the other 3 strings have.
What's the deal????

Lighter strings will usually sound clearer. If you're detuning, you're going to need heavier strings, or strings with a higher tension. Have you tried other brands?

That gauge string isn't made to be tuned that low. I would use nothing less than a .105. .110 would be preferable.BTW,are you tuned drop D,or D standard?

I know that GHS makes a set of Boomers that go from.50-.110 as well as Fender. That may be what you are looking for.
I once used the set on an Ibanez SR480. I tuned it to DGCF. I had to open up the nut on the slots that were tuned D and G. It did give me a good result. If you are tuning DADG then yes, I would not use anything less than a .105 for E. Look for a set of strings that have an E at a slightly higher tension to help compensate for the floppiness of the E string when it is detuned to D. That should help make it brighter to match the other strings.
