Mmm Flats, Tasty Flats

I just put a set of LaBella 760M flatwound strings (.109 - .089 - .069 - .049) on my Fender Precision Bass. Mmm, that's nice! Now I understand why so many P-bass players have expressed their preference for flats. There's that true thump sound. I'm pleasantly surprised there's plenty of sustain. Plus, the LaBella's are close in tension to like gauged roundwound strings. Yet, I'm able to get the action lower and has helped the intonation. The only thing I have to get used to is the increased friction when playing slides.

Since putting them on last night, I've only been able to hear the strings through a Korg Pandora box with headphones. Tonight I'll play it through my Eden rig with the rest of the band. Ahh, the fun of new toys...

I love the 760FM's on my Sterling. Plenty punchy with a very nice fundamental tone - simple and solid. I also love palm-muted picking with flats. I did find that I prefer the 760FL's on my 62RI Jazz and Fotoflame defretted P. They speak a little more clearly.

I finally played the P-bass through the rig jamming with the band tonight. WHOA! There's nothing like the deep, strong fundamental sound of flatwounds on a P-bass. I'm really happy with them. I already have another set on order for my 5-string Spector.
