Hello,

I bought last week a Modulus Flea 5.

I'm wondering in your experience what strings are better on this bass.

Thank You!!!

Never played a Flea, but when I first got my Q5, it had Elixirs on it and they were very smooth playing...but I haven't put any back on b/c they are so expensive.

Good thread though, i am curious as to what other Mod owners are using.

Although I no longer use Modulus basses I owned 3 Q5's and I also used ProSteels on them.

In fact, when I took a tour of the factory when they were in SF, Rich Lasner told me that they ship the basses with D'Addario steel strings. Back then they were called Prizms.

Hope this helps!

I have a Q6 with DR Hi Beams, two Genesis 5's (chechen fretless and maple fretted boards) with DR Black Beauties, and a VJ with D'addario EXPs. Modulus sends them out with D'addarios, but I've found the DR's last a good long time and still have a nice snap after a while. I used to have Elixirs on and really liked them, but they were not long enough and the windings finished before the nut on the Q6 and the Genesis 5ers. The Black Beauties I've had on for more than a year and still sound great. That's with playing/ practicing a couple times a week and gigging about every 3rd weekend. The D'addarios have a nice sound ( I've used them for almost 20 yrs ), but the Black Beauties really turned these basses into funk machines. I wish I would get a set for my Q6 but they don't make one. I still use the D'addario nickles on my VJ because they just feel so good and familiar. Side Note: all my basses have Bartolini pickups and I'm running them through either an AG500, DB750 or SWR Baby Blue, so it is kind of hard to mess up the sound
Hope this is helpful.

DR SS Lo Riders on my Q5 and VJ. They have a strong fundamental that complements the rich harmonics of the neck...and they last forever!

I used to use stainless steel D'addarios or MTD for ultra bright sound on my Q4, if I went back to it now I'd probably go with d'addario nickel med-light gauge

I use elixirs on my Q5 and Genesis 5 as well as my Lakland 55-94. They do make an extra long scale that will fit these basses no problem.

I'm currently in the process of trying a bunch of different string sets on my Flea fiver. My favorite results have come from DRs in 40-60-80-100-130. The High Beams slighty edged out the Low Riders (SS) for my preferences. The high beams have a bit more give/flexibility to them while the low riders feel a bit more tight/controlled. I've got a set of Fat Beams to try next and I'll follow that with the Sunbeams now that I've settled on a round core. I've got some Thomastik Infeld Jazz Flats on her right now which give some great neck pickup tones (I've got the version with Jazz pickups). I'm going to take them off soon and hold onto them in case the musical situation calls for them.

I have a Modulus Genesis Jazz. I found nickel strings just seem to smooth the bass out for my ears. I use fender nickels. By the way those Flea basses are awesome..enjoy

let's revive this thread! I'm currently trying to decide what strings would be best for my Q5. I've been using the strings that came on it and they sound good but it's about time for a new set.

Do DR Hi-Beams give you fret-buzz? Can they handle low action?
