I use 50-110. They stay in tune better last longer and sound fatter.

It does look like the mixed sets are coming in the clear winner. Would this be a good mixed set to consider?

These are the strings that come on some of the USA-made Jazz Basses.

Now that the new Fender 8250M strings are different they don’t sound as good or last as long as the older original 8250Ms use to.

EDIT: I have a 110TW on my mia standard P bass.

I think I'm going to stick with my lights. Does that mean I'm wimping out or something?

Seriously, it's more of an "ain't broke, don't fix it" thing that I arrived at after research.

.045 - .105 is considered standard "medium" by many companies.

Ya, that's one problem with the poll - there aren't standardized usages of terms like "light," "medium," etc.

Yeah, it seems to me a 45-100 is more of a 'mixed set' than 45-105 or 40-100.

I guess the nomenclature one uses is influenced by the brand one is most familiar with.

And of course some sets come .045 .060 .080 .105 which shows up at .045-.105 along with .045 .065 .085 .105.

Oh shoot...I thought you asked what was most popular, not what I use. I use 40-95 balanced tension XL's but I voted 45-100 because that's by far the most popular gauges.

Right now, I have regulars on that came on my Yamaha. Exact gauge unknown.
I'm waiting till they go bad and then, I have my extra lights ready. 035 to 095

I wonder if feel while slapping as to do with the sets like 45-100 and 40-95, where the E and A are a lot less tight than the D and G. Thumb strings vs finger strings? I know slapping can be more complex than thath, but its a guess.

Not sure what the op's point is in asking what gauge is most popular, the one that I see most often is 45-100. Which is a sort of medium gauge. Which gauge to buy should be specific to the bass and the style of music/ tone you are going for. I generally prefer the heavier gauge 50-110 for the beefy bassy tone and the strings stay put ie I don't have to go looking for them with my right hand. I do have one bass that has a one piece neck and I'm afraid it would warp if I put such heave strings on so I use 45-100's on that one. Anything lighter than that I feel like you give up too much bottom end.

I'm using 0.045-0.065-0.080-0.100 on my jazz bass. I'm trying to decide if I want to change it. It's looking like I should just keep what I have.

I use .050 .070 .085 .105 and swap out the .105 with a .120 for my drop D bass.
