Let's say I wanted to really accentuate the "ping" of a Musicman Stingray or Sterling. What string would really do this justice? I assume stainless roundwound. But I could see arguments that SS strings are actually kind of low and high forward, mid shy. With nickel strings being a little more middy.
I am also interested in knowing which brands have more of that ping to them. Any clues?
For reference I used D'Addario up til the 90's when something changed on them. Then I went to DR for a while, and still do. More recently I bought a metric ton of Dunlop strings. They sound good, but are not as pingy (or controllably pingy) as the DR's are.
ps. I really cant wait for the debate to ensue as to what pingy is, and the inevitable application of Godwins law.

The pingiest strings I've ever used are those really bright DR steels. I forget which ___beams they are, but they are the brightest and pingiest strings I ever used.

I have tried sunbeams but found them kinda tight compared to the regular DR's I get.

Maybe I would on a Stingray or Sterling, but pretty much any string sounds pingy on them.

Seriously, a little ping goes well when balanced with zing. Now do you look for a crisp ping with a growly zing? Roto 66's.
But I agree the Sunbeams have a strong yet controllable ping and not too much zing. DR coated have less zing and about the same amount of ping, with a bit of pong thrown in the mix. Kinda ping, pong, zing goin' on.

Ernie Ball Slinky's are nice too but don't last very long. Maybe 2 weeks. The XL's will last me a good month. ProSteels about the same. |
