Most "versatile" string...

I use that term with discretion but what I mean is which string gives you the most of every department with out being to bright/warm, to tight/loose, to rough/smooth, etc...
And I can't pin my finger on one sound i want to mimic. The biggest influences on my playing style are Flea, Tim Commerford, and Sting. I play "rock" and occasionally switch tunings to meet the needs of the songs we are covering. I have a little bit too much fret noise in my opinion, but im sure that I only hear it because my head is basically right next to my bass, so it propbably isnt that big of a deal in the band situation. I play a Fender MIM Jazz that I believe has the stock strings on it, and it is ready for a new set, and I am just looking to do something to open up a new can of worms so to speak, just something to improve my tone a little bit.

I'm kind of leaning toward trying a DR string to learn what they are all about...which one would best suit my needs in your opinion?

I am sure everybody has a favorite, but I have found the Fender Super Bass nickel Roundwound,G.H.S. Boomers Nickel Roundwounds and D'addario XL Nickel Roundwounds (my favorite) all to be very versatile strings.
