MTD String Issues/Problems??

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello,

I'm a long time MTD player and MTD string user. I recently purchased 2 sets. These both have the new packaging. 45-130 and of course for 5 string.

Here are the problems -

1.) Both E strings in both packages had the cloth covering extended way too low or "Far" and when strung up the cloth will not clear the nut?? Is MTD or Dana B Goods aware of this, seems funny two sets have the same problem.

2.) I put one of the sets on and the B and E strings died almost instantly. The A, D and G all still sound good (I've only played it twice for about an hour Max) but the E and B have no "Zing" and are dead. Also, I noticed the B and E being a little darker in color than the a, d and g. Could it be the coating they put on them? I don't think its a pick up issue as the volume is still consistant..just they lost all their brillance. I also had to remove about a 1/2 inch of the cloth on the e-string to clear the nut??? hmmmm??

Any comments on this would be appreciated

Have you contacted MTD about ths? I'm sure they would be happy to help you with your concerns, and if they can't they will point you in the right direction. All my dealings with MTD customer service has been excellent.

I had the same issues a coupla' months back. Definite QC problem, and it seems to have crossed over on more than one batch. I'd start with your dealer/retailer - certainly worked for me. Beyond that, I agree with Tony - I'm sure MTD will take care of you, and they can add this to what I understand to be a long list of complaints with the string maker.

Thanks guys, I just e-mailed Mike at MTD. I'll see what he's got to say and go from there

Yep, I stopped using MTD SS string because of this issue, except I experienced it on a few different strings a few too many times. I'm loving DR fat beams and lo riders now, couldn't be happier.

Cliff, I hear you, my man! On some basses, though, there's just nothing like those SR2000's err.... MTD SS strings. I have been frustrated over the past year, though. On a number of occasions the (cough) distributor (/cough) has shipped 'medium' sets instead of 'custom medium' ones. This, along with the QA/QC issues definitely makes for a head shaker. I've always been a bit disappointed in the overall durability of these strings, but on its own that's an issue I can accept.

On three of my basses - the MTD and both fretted Roscoes, I just absolutely love the sound, feel, and tension of these strings. DR's are terrific backups - as are Smiths, though.
