multiple part 7 string question

Sign in to disble this ad
I am sure these have been adressed but I wasn't sure searching a bunch of hunches would yeild results as quickly as just asking. I am about to embark on the 7 string journey, and am totally clueless on this stuff. I am not really picky about strings, I just buy elixers and call it good, but for this application that doesn't appear to be an option. So a 3 part question:

1: What would you generally consider the lightest guage possible to use on a 34" scale bass for low F#?

2: What are some options that will get me similar feel and sound to elixers in said gauge if I keep using them for the other 6 strings?

3: Does anyone offer a 7 string set (either for high F or Low F#) similar to elixers if I decide that is easier?

I have not heard exactly complimentary things about conklin strings from the (small) pool of suggestions I have so far gotten. Since I am in relative ignorance about these matters, any help thats out there would be great. Also, feel free to call me a noob, blast me for not searching, or insulting my choice in headgear. I just like to feel noticed.

now, sir, i can not speak of conklin strings, but i can tell you of SIT strings. I know a few of our erb buddies around here use them. I would say shoot the owner an email or ask stew mckinsey to track him down. Once a store sent me the wrong sit strings. I asked for nickel and got steel. I complained here on TB and the owner saw it and contacted me via email and sent me 2 free boxes of strings. They are really a great company and he is a really nice guy. Maybe check them out. Now, i know they dont have coated strings, but he does make custom strings and gauges for people, and i bet if you want that warmer sound you can maybe get an all nickel string or something like that.
