Yeah I've done that too, it depends on the bass, my 4-string no problem but on my 6-string that only works on the smallest one and only if you tie the string on right I looked for a picture but didn't find what I was looking for. Basically you wrap the string around one half of the tuner tie it then tune.
Circle K also makes guitar string singles total length 42" (these work on my 6-string).
I used some of those as piccolo strings last year. Found that the .009 could tune up to E4(same as guitar)

If you do go with Circle K try one of those .142 (for other bass)that string kicks ass.
