My bass sounds flat :(

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a Fender MIM P Bass, with Seymour Duncan SPB3s and a Leo Quan Bad Ass 2

I have Ernie Ball hybrid slinkys on it, and the a strings sounds really flat the other strings are souding quite flat, but sound better then the a string. The strings are about 1 month old.

I have to have quite a high action, to prevent too much string buzz.

And i tend to play with a pick (.60mm Tortex, if that helps :S)

Any ideas or help appreciated

P.S - Are Fender 7250M strings any good ?

Try new strings, either just a new pack or an all around new brand. Should solve tonal problems. Sometimes strings are duds. A month can be a long time if the strings are played a lot.

New strings.

Sounds more like enclosure and EQ choices to me. Don't do much or any boosting of lower frequencies for starters. If there's too little of something it's often because there is too much of something else.

I think Ernie Balls in general sound pretty dull myself.

+1

Not a fan of the EB strings myself. The tension is too low for my taste and they die pretty fast. Go with some D'addario XLs, Rotosound SwingBass, or my personal favorite, DR Lo-Riders. I think you'll find the tone much improved.

+1 on the Lo-Riders. Used EB strings for years and recently tried a set of the DR's. No looking back.

Hartke's are pretty bright (too bright if you ask me, but you didn't and I don't much care for bright strings) and they are really cheap. Might be worth a shot, since they are only like $10 a set.

You'd be amazed how much different, different strings sound.

You should experiment with different strings until you find a set that has the sound you like.

And I should add that nothing will breathe new life into your sound like replacing tired old strings with brand new ones (roundwounds...flats don't need changing much if ever, generally speaking). It's amazing how bad your rig can sound after your strings get old (roundwounds that is ), when all that you need is a new set of strings.
