SIT PowerWounds. Recently tried about 10 different sets from Jason and these were the brightest. Did not try the Rock Brights, though....they may be even brighter considering they have 'bright in the name

EXL180 is the string set part number, the 6 string set part number you were using for example was either EXL165-6 or EXL170-6...

You will want to order this:

1 x EXL180 35-95 Four String Set
http://www.bassstringsonline.com/DAd...-Set_p_81.html

1 x XLB025W .025 Single String
http://www.bassstringsonline.com/DAd...h-C_p_284.html

1 x XLB120 .120 Single String
http://www.bassstringsonline.com/DAd...w-B_p_288.html

I am sorry I do not know how much clearer I can make this.

Mod's I am being asked directly about something related to my site which is why I am posting the links. If this is in violation please advise.
Thanks for the advice, and now it's very clear to me as to what I should and could try on these basses that clearly can't have a high tension string on them.... I'll be checking that out today, and once again, thanks for he patience and suggestions!!!!

Gratefully Allan!!!!

So, what you're saying is that there's a part 2? And where would we find that?

Kidding!

I only used the font that large because I've said it twice and people didn't seem to see it and kept posting here.

Hello bassists, a new member here!

I am 50, living in Hungary, learning bass right now. I have a short scale bass (low tension) with a bit boring tone. I would like to buy a set of new strings, steel, round wounded, but I have a question:

Fatter strings generate higher tension, I know. My goal is higher tension. But a short scale bass is like a drop down tuning. Will fat strings have higher tension on a short scale bass than a normal (or thin) string set?

Hey Reku,

Welcome to the forum and the bass world!

If you have a .100 gauge string on a 34" scale instrument it measures 38.5 pounds of tension

A .100 on a 32" scale instrument measures 32.3 pounds of tension

On a 30" short scale the same .100 string will measure 28.4 pounds of tension.

So as you can see, the shorter the scale the less tension on the string.

Thanks slapinfunk,

could you give me the same numbers for the .105 string (same type) as well please?
Or a link to a table with these data...

Google was so kind: http://www.tothestage.com/upload/stringtension_1949.pdf

Now I learned that the tension characteristics of the same type, different diameter strings are identical, only shifted upper the fatter the string is.

The tension follows square proportion rule: If I shorten the length by 10%, the tension will drop 1.1x1.1=1.21 (21%). If I wanted the same tension on a 30.5" scale as on the 34", I needed 10% bigger diameter strings.

The problem you are going to find is most string makers have a limited supply of strings for short scale and are usually standard gauges..

Hard to find anything heavier than 105 in short scale.

I got some D'Addario EXL160S 50-105 from you for my short scale Gibson Thunderbird and they have nice tension. I normally play 34" scale and these felt good to me, comparable to what I'm used to playing. 105 seems sufficient for short scale to me.

The bass came with lighter strings, probably 40-100, and they were somewhat loose. Why manufacturers use strings that light on a short scale is a mystery to me.

IMHO most of the short basses are designed for children. That's why they have a light, agathis body, light strings, thin neck.

I will buy a 50-105, and will see the tone.

My short scale Coronado 2 is certainly not designed for children! Gassing so bad for a Starfire and Beatle Bass. All nothing but tone. Would love a Mustang too!

My Coronado wears Chromes 45-100 and even though the tension numbers are low they do not lack tension or playability compared to a 45-100 set on a 34" instrument.

My Gibson Thunderbird short scale certainly isn't for kids. How many kids have $1000 for a bass?

My Epi Allen Woody Rumblekat isn't for kids either. Allen Woody was a large man.

You get a short scale for it's tone. Just because a kid CAN play it easier than a long scale doesn't mean it's FOR kids
