are my strings dead?

Sign in to disble this ad
hey guys. i was just giving a friend a bass lesson. he has a shecter diamond series bass and i have a music man stingray. i noticed that when i slapped on his bass, it sounded much better (brighter/snappier)
fingerstyle however sounded better on my bass.

ive had ernie ball powerslinkies on my bass for about 4 months.
is this maybe because my strings could be dead?

Same set of string for 4 months , I would guess that they are probably pretty dead by now , I know some people like to keep there strings on for a while but really I think roundwounds only really last 2-3 months

Rounds last me 2-3 shows, not months. So yeah I'd say they're probably dead.

Soak them in denatured alcohol or buy new strings.

Well I know people who use rounds for 2-3 months before changing them but myself when I used to use rounds I was always a fresh pack every 2 weeks kind of person. Rounds to me sound horrible once they've gone dead

I find that ernie ball strings go dead super fast. You guys must have an unlimited bank account to change strings every 2 or 3 shows. I find my DR's stay fresh for at least 6 monthes, but I also have like 5 basses I play so they dont get all the brunt of my practicing all the time.

If you don't know if your strings are dead or not and you are asking on an internet forum, I highly doubt your competence as a bass teacher and I think you should think twice about inflicting your pals with your underdeveloped playing skills.

I am no skilled bass player myself but it bothers me to read threads such as these.

well i just havent ever paid any close attention to strings before, so i guess thats why i wasnt sure how dead they were.

my teacher about year ago told me that older strings sound better, so i guess i just thought that

but doubt my competence if you please.

but just because i dont pay attention to strings does not mean i am a bad player
plus i do not have much money to keep buying new ones

I've always changed strings every 2-4 gig's no matter what namebrand. I just started trying out the denatured alcohol soaking trick. My cleaned DR Highbeams stayed bright for 2 gig's which is normal with new ones. I'm becoming a believer. Just keep two or more sets and switch them out every week.

My strings on my frankenbass are 6 years old and they're still good.
