My TI's surprise!

I bought this mint condition used MIM Fender fretless Jazz for $420, which is seriously as nice as any MIA Jazz I've played, only to find that it's strung up with a set of TI Jazz Flats! Score!

Bonus! Just got some on my EBMM Classic. They feel as good as they sound. And the great thing about them is that they get better with age.

Enjoy!,

Yeah you can play that bass 10 years and may never have to change strings again. Very cool.

Are the T.I.'s THAT good??? I've found Chromes to be my favored flatwound so far, but haven't tried TI's as of yet.

Why SO SO good???? Coz -if, as U say, they ARE that good, I certainly will be leaving 'em on for 10 yrs!!!

The Chromes on my Jazz have been on for about 15 months & I still like them lots.....

I'm not sure I like the sound better than Chromes or Sadowsky flats, but the feel is SO much nicer! They've got a supple feel but they're not floppy at all. It's like the perfect string tension.

TI flats are not "better" than Chromes or any other flat, just different. They are low tension, mid-present nickle flats that produce a nice warm, round tone. I find they sound wonderful with P-basses, their middyness seems to compliment the P-basses natural low-mid tone, producing fat, but clear notes. I don't like TI flats on Jazz basses, however. Not because they sound bad on Jazzes, I just have found I like LaBella flats better on my Jazz basses.

Chromes are great flats too, brighter than LaBellas but just as percussive. I've recently rediscovered Chromes and really appreciate the note clarity they bring.

I might end up trying Sadowsky flats on this Jazz, but I'm pretty happy with these TI's for now. Now I'm just waiting for the adhesive mylar I ordered to come in so I can coat the fretboard. More mwah!!

Two of my friends have a very similar MIM Jazz from around 2002-2006 but fretted. Both their basses are unbelievable quality.

I had TI Flats on my Jazz basses for a while. I loved them to death. I eventually switched them to rounds for the only reason that I missed that "roundwound" sound.

I'm currently digging LaBellas, but still hold a soft spot in my heart for TI Jazz flats.

Don't believe the hype.

TI's are pretty good - got a set myself to play with, but the tension is pretty low compared to normal flats, comparable to light gauge roundies even! ....so much so I found they're a bit too loose for me in standard EADG.
I do have a pretty heavy percussive finger-style action tho, so if you've got a softer touch you may be alright with them.
The 5 banger set DOES tune UP to C,F,A#,D# just nicely though.
Are they better than chromes? Dunno man, if you're happy with chromes I wouldn't bother.

Believe the hype.

They are by far the most defined and articulate flats I've used, and the feel is just to die for.

If you're happy with the TI flats, I'd suggest keeping them on as long as you can. They tend to age really well (like fine wine!) and as I said above last for years. I've got them on several of my basses and they're staying there perhaps as long as I own the basses.

I really don't like TIs all that much--the A string especially bugs me the way it sounds compared to the rest.

BUT it's great you got a free set. At the very least a quick Craigslist-buys-your-lunch-or-three kind of thing.

Thanx guys. I'll try a set of TI flats ONE DAY!!! But I think I'll stick with what I KNOW & LIKE at the mo'. Might grab a set of chromes for the new AC EUT5. HAve heard that some flat B strings are a bit ' flub ' & one TB'er has a round B string with a set of Chromes on the E,A,D,G strings.... might try that, but will probly grab a 5'er set of chromes to start with. Will let ya know my views.
Thanx again,
ROD

Very nice. I think we need sound clips

I tried the TI flats on my fretless jazz but couldn't get on with the low tension. I use Status flats now which are the best I've tried IMO

Pickups and electronics play a big part here.

Love TI's (JF345) on my BB415 (P/J).

Got Ernie Ball 2810s on my Ray35. They sound better than the TI's on that bass. The 2810s are a little higher tension than the TIs (about 1.25 turns of the truss). I prefer the TI's lower tension, but I'm keeping the 2810s on it.

TI's sound really good on my Jack Casady as well.

Bob

I'm going to be upgrading my electronics next month and I'll do some before and after sound clips.

Status flats, huh? What are they like?

I also bought a used Fender Jazz with a maple neck recently that came loaded with a month old set of TI Jazz flats. Between the maple and the strings I could see how some players would find them almost too smooth to play. . For me, it's close to perfection as I have a fairly light touch. The sound is pure Fender Jazz tone.
