Need advice on nickel-plated roundwounds for a Fender Jazz

Sign in to disble this ad
I just ordered the new Fender American Deluxe Jazz Bass. I'm debating what kind of strings to put on it. I definitely want nickel-plated roundwounds, but I don't know what brand or what gauge to go with. I was also deciding on coated or non-coated.

The bass will come with Fender nickel-plated roundwounds on it, but I don't know how good Fender bass strings are. I was also looking at D'Addario EXP coated bass strings, but I've been told that D'Addario's are too bright. Rotosound RN 66LD nickel-plated and Thomastik-Infeld Power Bass strings are the others I was looking at.

I play mostly finger-style, and I play a lot of classic rock from the 60's-80's. What's your advice on strings for my new Fender American Deluxe Jazz?

Are they the Fender 8250 NPS? If so I bet they are too bright as the Fender 7250 NPSs that came on my MIM J Deluxe.

<edit> Nope! Just looked and they are the 7250 NPSs. ( http://fender.com/products/search.php?partno=0194580700 )
Quote:
Strings: Super 7250M, NPS (.045-.105 Gauges)
I disliked them from the start and put Elixir Nanos on mine and they are what it needs in my opinion.

You could check out DR Sunbeams. Smooth to the touch and warm sounding for rounds.

Try the Dean Markley Blue Steel's with nickel plating. I have them on my MIM Jazz bass and I have gotten compliments on the sound.

I looked into the DR Sunbeams, and they seem to be what I'm looking for. I've used D'Addario before and they're good strings, but they always seemed a little too bright for my taste. I'm still considering the Thomastik-Infeld Power Bass strings. Stefan Lessard, the bass player for Dave Matthews Band, uses them and I love his sound. They're a little expensive though ($49.99 per set), so I wonder if they're that much better.

I love TI PowerBass strings. They are kind of slinky and, if you believe in the "Myth of the Floppy B," you might not like the feel. But they have monster tone from bottom to top. Probably my favorite round wound strings.

Sumpthin' wrong here.

Howcome I hated the 7250s on my Deluxe J yet love them on my VM J?

The Deluxe J made rude noises and just felt all wrong with them and the Fender OE strings that are absolutely the same are then again so fantastic on my VM/J?

OK - I can understand the tone/attack issues and differences in the Active v Passive situation, but they felt wrong on one J and great on another J.

I think we have met the enemy - and found he is we.

Dunlop nickels sound perfect on my passive Jazz basses. I can't remember what strings I used on my American Deluxe Jazz. I think I had D'Addario's on it. They weren't too bright, to my ear. What a great bass! I had to sell it.
