Need advice on strings for a Warwick Thumb 5 (bolt on)

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm buying a Bolt on Thumb 5 used from a local music store. The strings on it were pretty dead and they offered to put a new set of Warwick strings on it. I played some of the new Warwicks they had in stock and I found the sound of the stock Warwick strings were way to bright and top-endy.

They agreed to include/put a new set of strings on before I pick it up, I wanna go with flat wounds and was going to get rotosound 77's but while I was there I tried a Steve Harris Pbass and was really shocked at the high tension.

I realize the Steve Harris (50 75 95 110) set is heavier than a 5 string set of 77's (45 65 85 105 130) but i'd like some opinions on/advice on whether or not this would be good choice for the Warwick.

As a side note I have a 4 string fretless that currently has a set of Thomastic Flat wound Jazz strings (43 56 70 100) which I absolutely love. The 5 string set adds a 136 low B. This was my alternate string choice.

FYI the Warwick is a 34" scale. Any and all advice appreciated.

I'd go with the TIs. There's nothing else like them. They are the lowest tension flat out there and also have a nice high mid thing going on that I would think would complement the Warwick tone nicely.

Chromes also sound really good on Warwick, if you're looking for other options. But if you like the TI's, go with those.

Very slightly higher than XL's. I've always been a roundwound player, the Chromes I just put on my Fortress One are my first ever set of flats. The transition was seamless--they have just enough added tension to make my timing and grooving a little easier, without being in any way harder to play. They're sure as heck not bridge cables.

Thanks for everybody's inpus so far.

Chromes: Tension slightly higher than TI's (and you have those, so you know) - feel is almost uttely smooth, almost as though they're a drawn metal rod as opposed to a wound string - tone is gorgeous - thick and thumpy, with just enough zing to be heard, and plenty of generic Good Bass Tone ('cause I'm bad at describing tone.)

Rotos: Tension ridiculously high. It's like trying to play coathanger wire. Feel is poor as far as flats go - they feel almost like groundwounds to me, as in there is an unacceptable level of bumpiness, especially on the E and A strings. Tone is, for lack of a better description, dead. Like a dog that's been shot fifteen times at point-blank with explosive slugs. It's just really dead and not, to my ears, attractive at all.

FYI, I currently use TI's on my Precision and Chromes on my Jag, and play them both though Eden amps.

Obviously, any talk of tone is highly suggestive - this is IME, and YMMV.

Hope this helps!

P.S. - in terms of Chromes, your string gauge makes a HUGE difference in tone. I like using Super Lights (40-95) on my jag, and they sound almost guitar-y with the tone full up. My previous favourite was Medium, and they sounded much more bassy. Never used a heavy gauge, but I'd assume they'd be even thicker, fatter and fuller than Mediums.

Thank you very much for everybody's input. I'm gonna go with the chromes (45-132), the store should have them in stock or be able to order them pretty easily. When it comes time for a change I might go with the TI's (depending on how much I like the chromes i may not wanna change)

I'm going to build a Pbass from warmoth parts (i'm going to try and make a copy of Roger Waters main P) and try the Roto's on that.

And last but not least I have a Lakland Joe Osbourne (skyline) that is probably gonna get TI's but I'm tempted to try the lakland Joe osbourne flats too.
