Question Need flatwounds with less tension than the Jamersons...

Sign in to disble this ad
...they're annoying me and are just TOO tight for me to play bass "normally"...

..I usually use Roto Swing Bass 100s...any flatwounds around with similar tension to those?

(I'm just after a really "dead" sound, y'know...no "Click" and no cheating by turning down the treble - FROM NEW...)

Labella 760FL's should be lower tension, they're what I use. You may also want to check out TI Jazz Flats, but they're very low tension. Maybe too much for you.

LaBella makes four other sets of flats (besides the Jamerson set), and they are all lighter than the Jamerson set.

From lightest to heaviest:

760FX (039-096)
760FL (043-104)
760FS (045-105)
760FM (049-109)

Question

Hmm...maybe I could try Labellas again...but I'm after another brand really coz labellas aren't that easy to get hold of in England...anyone had any experience of the Rotosound Jazz bass strings? - just wondering what they're like for tension...

the roto flats i used for awhile are less tension than the Jamies. Everything is. But I didn;t like the rotos perceived lack of lows and deep thump. Labellas, Fenders and GHS are more traditional sounding flats. I'm now diggin the Sadowsky flats- to me traditional sounding but with a nice bite

I like, and have used both the LaBella 760FL set, and the Rotosound 77s www.rotosound.com/bass.html#, but neither of them are dead-sounding, at least not when new. The Rotos should be in almost every shop in England.

I also tried the Jamerson set about 6 years ago, and took them off my Jack Casady bass after 3 days as I thought their high tension was going to pull the bridge off!

Have you considered using some kind of a mute near the bridge?

I don't think it would be cheating if it gives you the sound you're after.

Good luck.

Mike

Good description --I also really like the Sadowskys. Previously, I was using Ernie Balls, also good.
