Need help converting low B to high C

Sign in to disble this ad
I recently acquired my first 5 string bass, a Benavente custom with the b string through the body, and I would like to change it to a high C string configuration to better suit my playing style. Would I have to replace the nut? Also, are there any strings for sale that include a .30 gauge in the set? I would like a .30 .45 .65 .85 .105 type set, but it seems my only option is to spring for the six string set and discard the .130. Any suggestions?

I have never had to replace a nut when I went from B-G to E-C and I have done it on 4 different 5 string basses. As for strings, you'll need to get the 6 string set. There may be 5 string E-C sets out now but I am not aware of any.

Its worth trying the nut without altering, as it may work, or it may rattle when playing opens hard (which has happened to me).

With regard to the strings, there are a few companies that offer 4 string sets, and buying either the high C, or low B separately.

You should be able to buy single strings of most makes too, which would be preferable to buying a 6 set.

Hope this helps.

Most likely you will need a nut change. DR will sell individual strings or custom sets no problem. Have fun with your new 5 string.
Or you could just try it with the low b, personally to me that would be the only option, don't give up on the lows yet.
