1>Construction (how the strings are put together)
2>Material (what metals or other materials the strings are made of)
3>Gauge (the diameter of the string)
1>Construction-although there are many special strings made by each manufacturer that fit into their own categories, most strings are either roundwound, flatwound, or groundwound (also known as halfwound and pressurewound). Some other notable types are taperwound (these have an exposed core at the bridge/saddle) and tapewound (these are a black color).
2>Material- most strings are either stainless steel, nickel plated steel, or pure nickel. Here also, each string manufacturer usually has some special strings made with unique material or a blend of these other common materials.
3>Gauge- this is the diameter of the string. most sets come in various combinations of gauges.
Experimenting:Be Scientific!
Try only changing one variable at a time when trying new strings. You could go buy every gauge of the Ernie Ball Roundwound Nickel Plated Steel strings and see what your taste favors as far as gauge is concerned. Or you could by a set of each D'addario string set in 45-65-85-105 roundwound and find out if you prefer NPS to SS. Just remember that different strings will have different tensions and effect your bass guitar's action differently. Try to keep your action and intonation consistent to keep your experimenting scientific. |

Your gauge at the moment will probably be standard 45-105 (45 being the G, 105 being the E), so you could try anything under that.

Nickel rounds will give you more punch, steel rounds will give you more clang. |
