Need higher tension string!

Sign in to disble this ad
I just got my custom TBC Lightwave fretless bass back from Jack. He made a new neck for me with a cocobolo fingerboard. The original was pau ferro just not right. BTW it is amazing how much difference in tone there is between the woods. I use TI Flats and LOVE the tone, but with the new neck they don't have enough tension to pull the neck back far enough. There is no need for truss adjustment and it is not a bi directional truss rod. Therefore the action has to be pretty high so the first 2 or 3 fret positions don't buzz out.

So I am wanting advice on a string that will kinda come close to the TI tone (I know nothing is LIKE a TI) and a bit more pull without going too far tension wise. I was thinking LaBella 760FL. Do they have a bit more pull than the TI's? Anybody have any thoughts?? Tapewounds do not work. As far as tone, I am going for an upright sound. And man, I wish I could keep the TI's. Just want something that grows well. Thanks

A truss rod doesn't have to be bi-directional to be functional in increasing relief. Loosen it up a bit and the strings should take care of the pull.

If truss rod is loosened all the way, you need to send the neck back and have Jack build you one that isn't bowed.

I asked the same question a couple of days ago. Got some good input. Hope this helps...

Flats with slightly more tension than TI's?

FunkMetalBass is correct.

There is need for truss rod adjustment If the neck is too flat or back-bowed then you need to loosen the truss rod a little, you don't need a double-action truss rod, the tension of the strings (however low) will pull the neck into shape.

This way you get to use the strings you love (nothing is like a TI right?).

Any bass, double-action truss or not, should allow you to adjust the neck to the perfect shape while using low tension strings. If not there is something wrong with the neck.
