Trying to match new D-string to the other old ones. Tried Vaseline and BBQ sauce, and buried it for a couple days but still sounds too new. Any other ideas?

Play it? I find sweaty hands are able to kill the new sound quickly... just play under a hot light like you are at a gig, and it should die down in no time.

Hmm maybe several intense endurance sessions (i.e., for as long as you can do it) of heavy tremolo picking with your right hand and heavy string bending up and down the fretboard with your left hand.

Let me play it for about 15 minutes. It will sound dead and thumpy, I promise.
