Need a Starting Place

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey gang,

So I've never really thought a whole lot about strings...but after seeing a whole section devoted to strings, obviously they're a big deal I need some suggestions for a starting place...what strings should I look at, which ones should I stay away from. I play an Ibanez BTB1006 (6 string, BEADGC). I like to play a lot of styles, from jazz to slap, lots of harmonics, etc. People I wish I could play like: Wooten, Myung, Flea, Claypool, Jaco. These are the different types of styles I like as well. I can understand if one set of strings won't be good for all these styles...but I just really want a good starting point on where to even start. It's even harder because I play a six string...so things are a little more limited. In the past (on my 5-string) I've just gone into my local store and grabbed whatever D'addario's they had for a 5'er (XL's IIRC). Thanks guys, you all know more about this sort of thing then I do, so please educate me. I also understand that strings can be subjective...and that's ok. I just want a good starting point. I honestly don't even know what's on my bass currently, I would guess whatever Ibanez puts on their BTB basses stock.

My BTB455 is three yrs old. It came with Elixir Nanowebs. I like them, but they're generally about $50 for set of 4 plus the B.

I have tried a few different makes including Ernie Ball, Fender and Elixir on my 6 string BTB and find IMO Rotosound steel to be good for all the types of music you listed (I play a lot of Victor, Flea and Claypool too!). Some people find them a bit rough on your fingers and frets so its worth reading up on them on the forum (there are 100s of posts about Rotosound here) to see if you think they are worth trying. I'm sure one set wont hurt your frets, so its got to be worth a try, and you may decide its worth it (as I did)

That's what I kind of figured, but wasn't 100% sure. Gauges...will any gauge work on any bass or should I be worried about gauges?

I would go for standard gauge, based on your musical tastes.
