Need string advice! (fender p bass)

Sign in to disble this ad
little background info:

i play in a cover band so i want something that has a nice warm even tone, but not too bright.

i am switching from an active ibanez BTB with DR hibeams (personally love that sound but doesnt fit in the coverband.)

so i got a used fender mark hoppus p bass and i need new strings for it.

it is passive and string through body.

i want something that isnt THAT bright, but also bright enough to give a little character. i have never tried flats but i am interested.

help!

D'Addario Half Rounds!!! I love them!!! I have a jazz bass and cover lots of Tom Petty and realized the stock Fender strings were way to bright for that style music. I put on Half-Rounds and never looked back.

SIT Silencers. Not as dead as flats, not as bright as rounds.

GHS "Pressurewounds"
Ken Smith "Compressors"
TI-JF344 Flats.
Any of the above will give you tone your looking for.

Long scale is fine for stringing through the body ... unless you're using D'Addario Chromes. That's the only string I've come across that requires super long scale (but I prefer them top loaded anyway ... I use Chromes through the bridge though I have the option of going through the body).

When choosing strings personally, I find the tension to be as important as the tone. A lot of strings have great tone ... differences in nuances, but with eq and such, I can generally get a tone I can live with out of any string.

Tension though really impacts how well I execute what I'm playing ... that's where there are substantial differences between flatwounds and there are a lot of threads here on that topic.

Personally I think Chromes (45-100) or GHS Precision flats medium gauge are good choices if you want something with "middle" range. Other brands of flats can be expensive too, so experimenting can hit the wallet hard. D'Addario and GHS makes amazing strings that are priced right.

I don't have experience with half-rounds, but D'Addario and GHS seem to get the most love from the bass community for halfs / groundwounds.

Just fyi too, since there are always a hundred things to think about when doing something as simple as deciding on strings, after years of stringing through flats on Fenders, I recently started stringing through the bridge and find (personally) that the bass performs better ... lower action without buzz, less rattlling (TOO much resonance can be a bitch!), and better intonation.

Hope you find what you need quickly! It took me years!!

If you want to stick with rounds, get nickels, or let your HiBeams go dead.
