Need String suggestions for a 6 string

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm sure you guys get this question constantly, and I have dug around in the starter thread listed above and didn't quite get the answers or suggestions I was hoping for.

I received a six string for Christmas and it has basically become my go to bass. I've used GHS Bass Boomer's on all my four strings and figured I'd do the same for my six string. They sounded great at first, but for some weird reason the B and E string's sound on theme ages much much faster than the other strings, some thing that doesn't happen with their four string sets. I can't imagine why, I always wash my hands before playing and I don't play in environments that would be damaging for bass strings. I also don't really play more heavily on the B and E strings compared to the others. I've gone through two sets of Bass Boomers and they've both done the same thing.

So I'm looking for good suggestions on bass strings, or perhaps ways to avoid this weird, uneven string aging. The qualifications are:

Long Scale.
Roundwound.
Nickle plated Steel String.
Medium Lights.
Price Range isn't an issue.
Similar in feel and tone to bass boomers.

Thanks to all who respond.

Two options:

1. Fodera. I really like heavy strings because of the tight low end, so Fodera heavies have won my heart and are currently all I play on my 6-string basses.
2. Circle K Strings. The balanced tension gives you a lighter top end and heavier bottom (at least, that's the way it feels compared to most string companies, it's actually even across the board).

I haven't used Bass Boomers in years for the exact reason that you mentioned.
Unfortunately I don't have a suggestion for Nickle strings 'cause I don't use them anymore.
And since someone will ask, I use Ken Smith Stainless Steel Taper Core on my 5 and 4 strings.
The 6 string is still running Conklin Power Steels.

A big +1 to the Circle K Strings Balanced 6 String set. I've used them on my Streamer LX 6 since November and they sound great. The biggest thing is that all the strings are the same in timbre and volume across the board, because as you've found, with a 6 string set the lower or higher strings are very different in sound quality. With the Ks it is very even across the entire bass. I won't use anything else.
