needs strings for 35" scale fretless

I can't seem to find a decent pair of half wound strings for a 35" scale bass. I tired d'Addarios but the 5th string had some weird core winding near the top end of the string which I couldn't get completely over the nut. I dont know how I am going to be able to tune this if the string stretches. Bad design. I also found them to have a very tinny sound. Please suggest me another manufacturer and half wound model string! Also, please edumacate me on why i would want nickel wounds or coated strings rather than traditional steel strings. Thanks!

i'm currently using Ken Smith Compressors on my BTB1005FL. i like them alot and they fit just fine. i also have used TI Jazz Flats, also great strings, they come in different lengths to fit 35".
