DR Sunbeams or D'Addario XL series are my favorite nickle strings. With the same gauges the DR's have a little less tension than the D'Addarios. I use DR more because their standard set you can get at stores will fit a string-through-body bass. With D'Addario you have to get the super long sets, which are a special order for most stores.

+1 to D'Addarios, been using them for years! Bright & punchy. But, dial back the treble and do some palm muting and you can get a pretty sweet thump. Put a set on and let them go dead and that might be the sound you're looking for.

Never tried the DRs.

I don't think you'll need super longs though... I haven't put a set on my Pbass V yet (currently using Chromes strung through body), but I've got EXL170-5s on my USA Jazz V (strung through body) and I use the standard long scale works fine.

5sg.

DR Hi-Beams are what I have on all my P's, I get the vintage punchy tone I want and the strings last considerably longer than most other brands.

I have been using the Fender 8250m and I just love them. They are the string that came on my new MIA P-Bass.

+1 on DR Sunbeams or Fender 7150's
Both Nickel wounds and they get warm and "Vintage-y" when broken in

IMO TI Jazz Flats are the perfect string for the new Am Std P's
I can Thump, Slap, Growl & Sizzle if needed...
But I prefer a thick, warm, percussive tone with a slight growl

I love the 8250's that come stock on the new Fenders. I've tried DR nickel Lo-riders, Sunbeams, and the coated ones. Even though the colors look cool, the coated strings feel terrible (IMO of course). Overall the Fenders are a bit warmer than the DR's. Now I am stuck between the 7150's and 8250's. The 7150's aren't as harsh as the 8250's, and I like them both more than the DR's. I had Lo-riders on my Precision in the studio and did not like them. The Sunbeams are pretty cool though. As usual you'll have to try a few and see what you like...

Another vote for the OEM 8250's. Love 'em.

It's funny; lately when I try things that are not Fender, I do not have good results. LOL...I was using D'Andrea picks and DR strings, now I am back to Fender picks and strings. I don't have a Fender amp, but you get the point

I love TI JF's..... but not on the new Am Std P's. The pickup is a bit tame, IMO, to bring out the best in the strings. In fact, I notice a very distinct lack of attack when using the TI's on mine. I've changed over to Chromes on this bass (and I hate D'Addarios), and they seem to help out.

That's interesting, I get the opposite
It seems my PU's are super Hot! almost like active ( I have to engage -10db on my amp)
and my TI's just sing with lot's of attack & articulation

Of course our tone goals could be completely different...
