A New DR Convert!

I've used D'Addario XL170 (Nickel Round Wounds) for more years then I can count. Always were a reliable set of strings...until about two years ago I start to get some sets that, well did not sound right. Well long story short, I ended up using SIT Rock Brights Nickel Rounds....which I thought I was happy with.

Well after hearing all the hubbub about how good DR strings are, I figured I give them a shot. So after some research I ended up buying a couple of set of nickel Low-Riders (.045/.065/.80/.100).

First bass to put them was my Fender American Deluxe Jazz FMT (which is modified with a Sadowsky preamp).

Holy Whole In A Donut Batman!! What have I been missing out on all these years! What a noticeable difference. Can you say punchy! Perfect blend of tone from all strings. The G string on my bass actually has some balls to it now! Wow!

In comparison to the SIT strings, I think now the SIT strings are too bright for my tastes. Guess that is why they are called "Rock Brights"!

I did notice the tighter tension, but nothing I can't get use to. And so far I have not had to tweak the neck.

So onto the next bass. Went ahead and put the second set on 1988 Sadowsky Standard. Again, a noticeable difference. Every note was clear and had a great punchy tone to it.

Well the next test it to play live with them. But I have a feeling I will like what I hear! I already ordered a few more sets!

You know, this post comes at a very good time for me......

Recently, my XLs haven't been doing it for me as much as they used to (Too floppy, too dull sounding, etc.......)

I need something new to try and was thinking of throwing a set of DRs on my Lakland.

Nice timing. I'll give em a try when school gets back in so I can try em' with my fellow Jazz Comrades!

Hey Join the Club

After I have discovered the DR strings, I have stopped wasting my time looking for other round wound strings to try out. I use Fat Beams on my Marcus Miller 4 and on my ATK (light guarge), and Sunbeam on my Jaguar and Squier VM Fretless.

For flatwound, I use TI Flats.

If you don't like the tension of the Lo Riders, give the Sunbeams a try. Not exactly the same sound, but close, and with a tension I found to be much more comfortable

I REALLY wish Best Buy M.I. section carried DR's....I prefer them but we get D'Addarios at like half price....which is 1/3rd the price of a lot of sets of DRs. I prefer the DR's though, and I like GHS Bass Boomers for when i want some serious low-end
