I don't understand what happened. I switched to flatwounds about a week ago, set intonation, play about 5 times (full sets) on them. Yesterday my D string broke, and then about 5 minutes later my a string broke.

As far as i understand, flatwounds are suppose to last much longer. Am I doing something wrong?!

What kind of strings are they? Also, what bass do you have them on? These would be good things to know.

maybe you got a bad set?

where on the string did they break? bridge?

what brand?

I've had a set of Chromes on my jazz bass for probably 8 or 9 months and they are perfectly fine. But I do carry a spare set around with me just in case.

Sometimes if you have a ****ty bridge, it will cause your strings to break.

Is your bridge "string through the body" or through the bridge?

I broke a set of Labellas right out of the package because my Precision is string through. I called and they said that was a bad idea with standard strings. So they set me a set with tapered ends for free!

Arrow Broke Flats

I broke the D string on a new set of Chromes when stringing it up. I didn't chance it a second time, I put DR Blue Peacocks on it instead.

I broke some DR Hi-Beam G strings last year. Maybe I was plucking too hard.

Could that possibly be your problem?

thats pretty much what happens with flats

if you get a duff one it will snap pretty soon after you put them on

rather than last a while then go

cheers

Have used flats for years.
Flats don't like string-thru. bridges.
