New Sadowsky p/j, ditch the Roto's?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all, I have a fairly new (to me) NYC Sad p/j with Rotosound Swing 66's on it. These are great strings that have served me well through the years but I want to expand my horizons. I have the flat angle covered with my pbass. My j still has Roto's on & they're there to stay. What do I need on the Sad? I don't want to go more "piano'ie" or "trebley". Lo-Riders? Fat Beams? Sad strings? Help a brother out...

I have Sadowsky SBS40's (stainless rounds) on my 72 P-Bass, these really sound good... I can only imagine how they sound on a Sadowsky PJ... I don't own a Sadowsky, I am only commenting on the tone of their roundswound stainless strings behind a P-Bass.

Another string you may consider is the D'Addario Chrome Flats as they are pretty bright as compared to say Thomastik-Infeld Jazz flats. I have the Jazz Flats on my Alembic Persuader (P-J configuration) and they have a tone to die for. My other P-Bass has the Chrome flats and they sound very close to the Jazz Flats except they have the ability to get a brighter tone when needed.

Good luck in your search!

Rotosounds are great strings. For a change of pace I'd try Sadowsky Stainless and DR Hi-Beam, but I bet you end up back at the rotos.

I had a Sadowsky PJ5 and I thought it didn't sound as good with the Sadowsky steel strings (my opinion). In fact, I think the Sadowsky steel strings sound bad on every bass I tried them on. In contrast, I think D'Addarios sound good on the Sadowsky, and almost every other bass for that matter.

D'Addarios nickels are always my first try. Even if they aren't perfect for a bass, they never sound bad to my ears. To be more specific, the Sadowsky steel strings had less low end response and much stronger mids. The Sadowsky strings were a lot darker for this reason, and did not have a good slap tone to my ears (not enough highs, too much mids, not enough lows).
The D'Addarios have more bass, less harsh mids, sparkling highs, and sound great for finger style or slap.

I'd go with Labella HRS. I have them on my Sadowsky's and my P's and they are great. Nice tight but thick sound. Great for rock (duh, thus the name). Stay plenty bright but have a nice mid character to them. I also like the Sadowsky strings but just slightly favor the HRS.

+1 on the D'Addarios. I use the Pro Steels and they sound awesome and hold their tone longer than any other set out there. I have had alot of dead strings out of the box with Rotos that I will not use them again.
