New set of strings? which one for mellow?

Sign in to disble this ad
hi
i've got a SX 75'RI and i just broke my G string (pun not intended ), ive just been using the stock d'adario strings that came with the bass which give an awesome hi-fi marcus miller-esque sound but soon i'm going to be playing 'soft' jazz walking bass lines and such think 'big band' and the HI-FI marcus miller sound is hardly the tone required in that kind of setting.
So i was wondering which set of strings can bring a more mellow, warm, double bass? sound good for walking and not killing the horns?
Thanks

Flats baby. Try a medium light set of Chromes or Labella 760 FL's.

D'addario Chromes. Mediums or Medium-Lights depending on your personal preference.

TI jazz flats, with a little foam under the bridge, and you'll be all set IMHO

I'll go with Beefbass and second the TI flats. You may also want to give tapewounds such as some Fender 9120s, LaBellas, or GHS a go as well.

I would go for the Sadowsky flats. They are in the Labella camp but with a bit more definition. I just tried a set on an SX J, and they were great. The SX basses have the 70's spacing which combined with the Sadowsky flats, is super fat and yet still has a lot of definition.

The stock strings on an SX are light gauge (at least the two SXs I have bought). So you will most likely need a truss rod tweak and possbily some saddle adjustment unless going with a very light gauge set of strings (like TI flats).

DR Sunbeams. After 4-6 hours of playing on them will get nice and mellow and very adaptive to different styles.

If you've been using the stock strings then anything will be an improvement. I'd recommend trying some GHS Brite Flats. They are shaved down roundwounds. Very nice.
