| New string damaged between nut and tuner. Will this effect it?

I just got my new set of Rotosound RB45, and I noticed that my D string is damaged between the nut and tuner. It isn't anything serious, just one of the windings is broken. Will this effect my sounds? or make the string weaker and break easier? I wouldn't think it would make it weaker because it is before the nut, and therefore no pressure is put on it from playing. Just wondering if I should attempt to return them or play it as is. Thanks.
