New String Gauge : Nut Replacement Obligatory?

So if I want to switch to a new string gauge, will it be necessary to replace the nut? I could see this being a big problem if you were going from light strings to heavier strings (as the thicker strings might not fit into the nut slots), but what about going from a thicker string gauge to a thinner one?

For example, Fender 9050M's to 9050L's, or TI Flats...?

You really only need to do it if you go significantly larger than the stock strings to avoid sticking and tuning problems. Going smaller, I've never had any problems. I put those skinny TI flats on a bass designed for 45-105 rounds, and it was no problem.
