New Strings, Almost broken Nut

Sign in to disble this ad
So I got a new set *my first* of Ernie Ball 50-105's strings

Also my first time stringing

so when I was putting the D on, the same one that broke it wouldnt fit

theres the the slightly smaller part of the string that you wrap with and then the slightly larger part of it that goes in the nut

so in any case when i was putting the string on and the nut almost came off, like I tried to thread it in.

It fits in now, but has this ever happened with anyone else?

If I understand correctly, this is probably what happened. Your new strings are of a larger gauge than your old ones on some of the strings, meaning the nut slot was very tight as it was cut for standard gauge. So forcing the new string in dislodged the nut as it was too tight. If you are worried about your nut falling off () some wood glue under it will hold it in place. However you will probably need to alter the nut slots to accomodate the larger strings easier (they may be in at the moment but they probably wont feel like they should).

This happens all the time except usually minus the nut coming out.
