new strings (can't tune)

Sign in to disble this ad
I got a VMJ so I decided to get a set of flats (d'addario chromes) medium gauge, I had no problems tuning E and A but on D and G is impossible the tuner tells me that D is either G or A, and G is D!!! and nope the strings are not reversed
btw not sure if this thread belongs in here.

Try using harmonics into the tuner, or maybe play thru an amp and use your ears.

The tuner won't know the difference anyway.

Tuners will sometimes get messed up when you are getting close, but not on yet.

Use your ear. You should be able to tell if you are too flat or sharp.
If you're not sure, one trick is to fret notes higher and lower than the fifth note of the string lower than you are trying to tune.

ie. If your tuning the D string try playing D flat on the A string to see if your D string is flat and you need to tune up.

You can always tune pretty darn closely by tuning the G, then tuning each lower string by the 5th fret on that string. to the open string above it. Before electronic tuners that was how everyone did it. That will get you close enough to play and no one will hear the difference; it also should get you close enough for the tuner to lock on.

The same thing works in reverse. Tune the E, then hit the note A found at its 5th fret and tune the A string to that note. Hit the 5th fret on the A and tune the D to that note. Hit the 5th fret on the D and tune the G to that note.

Also make sure your volume is up full on the bass; turning it down often confuses tuners.

That's how I did it, and it seems to be in tune thanks for the advice guys.
