When my brand new Classic Stingray arrived in March 2010, the first thing I did, as always, was put a set of flatwounds (Chromes) on it. Problem was, due to the string-thru body, the silk wrap portion extended about halfway to the first fret!
I ended up putting a set of “Super Long Scale” Chromes on it, and the only time I’ve changed them since were for some GHS half-rounds, which have no wrap.
I’m ready to change strings again now, and I have become smitten with the classic LaBella flatwounds that my RW Precision came with. I want to put the same and/or very similar strings on the Stingray. Does anybody know which ones will “work” due to the long scale? I don’t care what brand – I just want THUMPY. |

The 760FL set would be a great set for your Ray. Great day today - La Bella Jamerson Thru Body Sting Set

I went ahead and ordered a set of the string-thru LaBellas from Bass Strings Online. Cool site and nice prices! Great reco.
The Chromes are nice strings, but IME they take a little longer to "break in" then most flatwounds. They are VERY zingy out of the box! I may go back to them, though - let's see how these LaBellas work out first! |

that being said I'm not much of a fan of flats on Rays, their inherent character seems to be overshadowed by that 'Flats' sounds and well - I've got Precisions for thump, my Stingrays are for punch and bite.

I really like TIs. They won't feel stiff when you play back by the bridge, like most people do on Rays. They are also pretty lively for flats, but not in a bright, zingy way, so they work great with that inherent Stingray tone.
