Aside from the aesthetics? No biggie.

PS, nice truss rod cover

Is it a Grabber?

My E string is like that... hasn't been a problem.

I had some that ended up like that once and I couldn't stand it. To me it affected the sound, but it could have been a mind thing.

I replaced them with the proper scale string, so next time buy a longer scale.

Take a box cutter and carefully cut some of the wrapping away if it bothers you. I've done it; it cuts away easily.

But if the strings are tapered it may affect sound.

Not to mention that looks like a lot of silk on there....that much silk will make the strings much bigger, so they won't sit in the nut right. They will also be much higher.

IMO, it could be a problem, specifically a setup issue. The string height at the nut isn't going to be exactly what it was intended to be - basically kind of all over the place according to how thick the wrap is on each string.

OK if it feels right as-is, but personally I'd be off getting another longer set soon as I saw this.... I.e. maybe extra long scale which I think the chromes come in?

chromes are not tapered, nor would they be tapered on that end. there's plenty of room to cut off silk.

Thank you to everyone for the input. I'm going to try cutting the silk away and see if that works.

I didn't realize that they made extra long scale chromes...

On a side note... are GHS precision flats silk wrapped as well? I was thinking about trying them next time around and don't want to make the same mistake.

Yes, they are purple. Just put a set on my Gibson EB3, sound great!

GHS Precision Flats are designed to fit everything up to 36" scale so they will be fine. They are "traditional" sounding flats with lots of bass and mids and have that unmistakable "thump". Three of my basses currently wear them.
